NMUS Training Guidelines

The ENMUS follow the consensus-based published guidelines for neuromuscular ultrasound training in all its courses and workshops:
‘Tawfik EA, Cartwright MS, Grimm A, Boon AJ, Kerasnoudis A, Preston DC, Wilder-Smith E, Axer H, Hobson-Webb LD, van Alfen N, Crump N, Shahrizaila N, Inkpen P, Mandeville R, Sakamuri S, Shook SJ, Shin S, Walker FO. Guidelines for neuromuscular ultrasound training. Muscle Nerve. 2019;60:361-366’. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/mus.26642

Our society president Prof. Eman Tawfik together with 17 international NMUS experts have developed the guidelines. The guidelines provide the learning objectives and the curriculum of different NMUS training levels (Basic, Intermediate and Advanced).
Following the guidelines ensures well-defined, uniform, and professional training among physicians which will eventually lead to uniform high-quality clinical practice.

At the ENMUS, we care about quality. Therefore, all training courses & workshops organized by the ENMUS are characterized by:
– Extensive hands-on training: Hands-on sessions occupy> 80-90 % of the course time.
– Small-group training.
– Training involves detailed tracing and scanning of nerves and muscles.

* The basic ENMUS courses focus on basic principles of nerve and muscle ultrasound, scanning techniques of main peripheral nerves & basic nerve pathology.
* The needed prerequisites before attending basic NMUS training include:
  1) Anatomical knowledge of peripheral nerves and  muscles,
  2) Prior background in nerve conduction and electromyography
  3) Knowledge of introductory ultrasound physics.
  4) Understanding of a few key papers/resources

* The intermediate-level ENMUS courses focus on uncommon nerves, branches of main nerves, and nerve and muscle ultrasound in generalized neuromuscular disorders, reporting findings, and research.
* The prerequisite for registration in an intermediate-level course is previous attendance of basic-level training, with all its learning objectives has been achieved.

* The advanced-level ENMUS courses focus on uncommon and small nerves, brachial plexus, color and power Doppler, emerging domains, advanced ultrasound techniques, and interventional neuromuscular ultrasound.
* The prerequisite for registration in an advanced-level course is previous attendance of intermediate-level training, with all its learning objectives has been achieved.
